Silk sericin is a natural macromolecular (large) protein created by Bombyx mori (silkworms) in the production of silk. Silk is a fibre produced by the silkworm when it spins its cocoon and it consists mainly of two proteins: fibroin and sericin. It envelops the fibroin fibres with successive sticky layers that help in the formation of the cocoon. Sericin contributes about 20-30 per cent of total cocoon weight.
Previously the sericin was discarded as waste but its great value has now been recognized as it has so many benefits: antibacterial, oxidative resistant, moisturizing properties, wound-healing and anti-wrinkle.
